As your parents get older, you should begin thinking about how you will care for your parents when they need even more help. There are not a lot of options, but one of them involves having your parents live with you when they can no longer take care of themselves. There are a few ways to do this.
Evaluate Their Home
You should look over your home’s safety to determine what may need to be changed. There are companies that can do assessments in your home to determine what you may need to change. You will want to consider whether the areas they will access are wheelchair accessible. They need to be able to get to their bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom at the least. These spaces should all be free of clutter, especially on the floor.
It’s also a good idea to evaluate whether your parents will need to move among multiple levels in the house. If stairs will be an issue, there are a few things you can do. You may want to look into getting a residential elevator installed to make it easier for your parents to get around. There are many incredible home elevators to choose from, so you can find something that fits your needs.
Think About Your Finances
It can cost money to have your parents move into your home, and the changes you may need to make might not come cheaply. And the cost of food, transportation, and any additional care can also add up. And depending on how much help your parents need, you may not be able to do everything yourself. You might find yourself needing to bring on a part-time or full-time nurse or aide.
Even if you can take care of them yourself, you might still find you forgot income by spending more time with your parents. You should sit down with them to talk about where these resources will come from. If they save money like a pro and have enough stashed away, they can contribute to the cost of their care. They can also use some of their Social Security income, long-term care insurance, or even proceeds from a deceased spouse’s life insurance, if applicable. Your savings account should be the last resource used, if possible. However, it is not uncommon for adult children to use their money when caring for their parents. If the care of your parents will someday fall on your own shoulders, you may want to start saving for that responsibility now.
Getting Help Set Up
Once you have decided where the resources will come from, it is time to get help set up for them. Their needs will determine what kind of help you will obtain for them. If resources allow, you might get a paid caregiver. The cost can depend on their location and the kinds of service your loved ones require. But you can receive assistance with things like cooking, housework, or transportation. And if you have friends or family willing to pitch in, they can offer support, whether emotionally or physically.
