Alberto Gil: co-Founder of Hockerty & Sumissura

Alberto Gil

Please state your name and a little about your current status.

My name is Alberto Gil and I am co-Founder of Hockerty & Sumissura. Currently, I am leading the Innovation Area and I am part of the Board. We tailor custom clothing for men and women through our 2 brands using only internet as our sales platform.

How did you start your company/business as a startup?

At that time the 3 founders were working on different areas. One of my partners traveled to China and had a custom made suit there. When he was back he showed it to us and suggested us to create a platform where customers could design and choose their own suit and we would make it and send it to their homes.

As we were experts in Digital Advertising and Website development, we accepted the challenge. 3 months later we launched Hockey.

What struggle did you go through to reach your current status now?

Well, in 11 years you go through many experiences. Maybe one of the biggest struggles has been the change in our brand name. In fact, we started being “tailor4less”. But some years later we realized our brand name was not representing what we were doing. Today, we still think that was a good decision, but it is really painful because you can’t avoid losing customers when doing such a change.

How did you manage to cope up with those straggles?

Hard work, believe in the change we did and keep explaining why we did it and how good was it for our customers.

Who inspired you to move forward and influenced you in all your achievements now?

Now I talk as myself. Who has inspired me the most and influenced me are my partners. Both Humbert Codina and Andreu Fernandez are hard workers, always looking forward. They are the main reason this business is successful today.

What piece of advice will you share with those who would like to follow your footsteps?

My main advice is: always be realistic. Study the market, not once, not twice, but as many times as needed so you can be 100% sure you have a business opportunity.

My second advice, if you are looking to fund a business, do it with an uneven number of partners: 1, 3 or 5. Avoid 2 or 4.
