How did the business start?

Functionised was the product of a multitude of years in wanting to create better versions of people. As much as I have a passion to make athletes better athletes, I realized there was a need elsewhere. Individuals claim they do not have time for their health and fitness, which directly correlates to an increasing trend of obesity and disease. The solution was created to accomplish better health and fitness in the least amount of time while achieving the greatest amount of benefit.


What are the challenges you met and how did you manage to cope up with these challenges and reach your current status?

It’s understood there will be challenges along the way. The biggest challenge at first is to let the world around you know who you are and why you are the solution they need. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have done in the past. No one knows what you are doing now unless you tell them. In that aspect, it’s a constant grind daily to be in people’s faces. With so many forms of attention and such little attention spans, it takes more occurrences to connect with someone than ever before. So we utilize numerous forms of media, newsletters, guerilla marketing, phone calls, meetings, groups, gatherings, etc. Whatever we can do to reach individuals, we do that.

Who influenced you in this industry and how did he/she influence you?

Raphael Ruiz is one that constantly stands out in my mind as being the influence in my life who began to shape me to strive to learn more. To me, he is the smartest human in the field of strength and conditioning and philosophy of life. He understands how to coach different individuals and to constantly strive for knowledge.

At the time of my first internship with him, I had no business being in the same room as him. I was the proverbial “slug”, doing the grunt work. I cleaned multiple times per day. I got the morning smoothies, lunches and was often left out of meetings. It was what you do to earn your way to the top.

I took pride in what I did though and wasn’t sure why I was doing it. But to this day, I take pride in cleaning the bathrooms in my own facilities because it’s a direct representation of myself and what I represent.

Through Raph’s influence; when I was exhausted at chiropractic college- I would push a bit longer when studying because I wanted to be able to know more about the human body than he did. He is an expert amongst experts and if I could hold a discussion with him on a topic of physiology or biomechanics, then I would know I made it.


How did you manage to market your business and compete with other agencies in your niche?

I don’t see other organizations as competition as most are very narrow in their vision. I recognize the individuals who enjoy fitness in this world are a small population. Those who want to be better versions of themselves are a large population but without any intrinsic motivation, they will fail. I provide a solution. If an individual can commit to only 15 minutes per day, do their health- they can be in the best shape of their lives (PROVEN). If they cannot, then why bother beating themselves up each day for failing a cause they were destined to fail? My concept is minimal effort, minimal time, maximum results for health.

We market through word of mouth, phone calls, email campaigns, constant social media, podcasts, Live webcasts, seminars, news media, and grassroots campaigns.


What Best Practice/s can you share to our startup readers?

Follow your passion. If you follow your passion each day, you will cease to work and live life to the fullest. I once followed money instead of my passion and I was the most miserable I had ever been in my life despite ever exogenous reason to be grateful. Once I followed my passion, life has presented opportunities and gifts I never thought possible. When you follow your passion, you do not mind putting in 14-18 hour days or even dedicating your time around the clock.

I also advocate greatly living in gratitude. Each night before bed, I give thanks for three things (different from the days previous). Each morning I give thanks for the day before placing my feet on the ground. I have instilled this is my own children and we give thanks each night before bed together as a family. When you live in gratitude, great things come to you. When you live out of gratitude and complain of things, those things come to you. It’s your choice and it’s a way of life. It’s a lot more than saying you are grateful. It’s about truly BEING grateful.
