Please state your name, your position, and a bit of your Business?
My name is Kayshaun Brooks. I am the founder and CEO of Renew You Body Butters. I make organic skincare products to help people manage their dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis. I also customize products per customer specifications.
How did the business start?
My business started out as a necessity. Myself and two of my sons have severely dry skin and eczema. However, my youngest son had the most severe case of it, and he started as a newborn. I watched for years my baby boy tear and scratched his skin until bleed. Leaving all of these horrible scars on his skin and near a blood infection. We tried everything the doctors told us to do. The only time he had relief was when he was medicated to sleep. I spent thousands of dollars buying every cream or lotion the stores had to offer and nothing gave lasting results. Someone told me to try using natural oils and butter. That was the best advice ever given to me. I started trying the regular simple ones I knew of like olive oil and cocoa butter. As time went on, I researched and tried many different blends until I got the mixture that gave him, myself, my family and others the best lasting results. After a while, someone suggested that I start a business and sell what I had created, and that’s how Renew You Body Butters was born.
What are the challenges you met and how did you manage to cope up with these challenges and reach your current status?
Who influenced you in this industry and how did he/she influence you?
I am trying to find a solution for my son; it what influenced me. I had to find a solution to end his suffering. There was no stopping until he had relief. Learning more about organic and natural products has sent me on a journey I couldn’t have imaged. I have so much more to give to the world.
How did you manage to market your business and compete with other agencies in your niche?
I started marketing my business through word of mouth. Then I started doing vending shows and I would give samples of my products out for free. Most of the time, when people try my product, they don’t say no. The proof is in how the product makes your skin feel. One way I have been able to compete with others in my niche is offering to make customized products. I know people are allergic to certain things, so instead of making hundreds of different products that might not sell as fast as others, I’ll let people tell me exactly what they want in their products.
What Best Practice/s can you share to our startup readers?
Having a passion and a why for whatever you are doing. I say this because when things get hard and you feel like giving up, that’s when you have to think back to why you’re doing this. That why and passion is going to give you the strength to keep going and not give up.
