We have the opportunity to interview Shital Parikh Mars. Her experience in running a business will help our avid readers in their venture to start their own Business from Scratch. Our Spotlight Stories will feature Shital Parikh Mars’s experience in starting her own business.
Please state your name and a little about your current status.
My name is Shital Mars and I became the Chief Executive Officer of Progressive Care and it’s subsidiary LLC, PharmaCo in January 2016. Prior to becoming CEO, Ms. I was the Chief Operating Officer for 4 years and a vital consultant to Progressive Care from 2010 through 2012. As President and CEO of Spark Financial Consulting, I provided business development consulting services in which I advised the Company on human resources, financial reporting and transactions, operations, compliance, SEC filings, and investor relations, among other things. During my tenure with the company, Progressive Care has doubled in size, including revenues employees, locations and patients we serve.
What exactly does your company do?
Progressive Care is a publicly-traded healthcare services and technology company based in South Florida. Progressive Care provides of prescription pharmaceuticals, compounded medications, provider of tele-pharmacy, the sale anti-retroviral medications, medication therapy management (MTM), the supply of prescription medications to long term care facilities, administration and practice management, utilization management, quality assurance, EHR Implementation, billing and coding, and health practice risk management.
Today, Progressive Care does over $20 million in revenue a year and is rapidly growing. The 5-star pharmacy is ranked in the top 20% of all pharmacies in the nation and is revolutionizing the role of the pharmacy by redefining what a pharmacy does and how it integrates into the health system.
How did you start your company/business as a startup?
PharmaCo, LLC was established in 2005 as a Florida Limited Liability Corporation with the goal of becoming a premier pharmacy in the South Florida community. Since that time, the company has evolved into a health services company that centers around the provision of prescription pharmaceuticals. As part of this evolution, the company has added a number of services and business lines including custom compounded medications, medication therapy management, 340B services to charitable organizations, case management linkage, health practice risk management, and in-home health risk review. We’re dedicated to treating our customers with compassion, professionalism, privacy, and respect with a commitment to education, support and community outreach.
Progressive Care is now moving forward in its endeavors to grow the company by expanding its facility, adding new locations, acquiring operating pharmacies, and further developing our current business lines.
What struggle did you go through to reach your current status now?
My unique and non-traditional background helped shape who I am as a leader today. My story begins with working three jobs, barely making ends meet. At that time I was a special education tutor, a bookkeeper and an unpaid intern at an investment banking firm. During the financial crisis, I couldn’t afford the gas it took for the one hour commute to my unpaid internship leaving me no choice but to call in broke to work.
How did you manage to cope up with those struggles?
It was through my dedication and determination that I was able to reach the executive position in which I hold today with Progressive Care. I hope that it inspires female entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams and know that anything is possible with determination and hard work.
Who inspired you to move forward and influenced you in all your achievements now?
There are so many people who have believed in me when I did not believe in myself. But I would not be where I am without the controlling shareholder of the company. I worked for his company as my first job out of college. People tell him, I was the best Craigslist hire in history, which I find funny. But he never lets me say “I can’t” and he pushes me forward no matter how hard I resist. He encouraged me to become the CEO of Progressive Care and I will forever be grateful for that.
What piece of advice will you share with those who would like to follow your footsteps?
The advice that I would give to anyone working towards leadership and management roles is to be clear. Be consistent. Be decisive. Treat others how you would wish to be treated. Lastly, control the direction of the ship. Whether you are guiding a meeting agenda or inspiring a company-wide staff to move together with passion and common cause, you must make sure you have control of the dynamic. I’m 5’2” tall and I’m a relatively young woman, but when I walk into the room, I make sure it’s clear that I am in charge. Meetings can get off track and people can lose their way, as a leader you have to cut through the noise, speak with authority and lay out the direction for everyone to follow.
